Every car has a differential. It is a component that compensates for the difference in wheel speed to create the appropriate wheel balance. Cars with their differential on the rear end have a specific housing that hosts the differential only. In this case, the lubricating oil is normally dark in color and weighs more than 80 grams. For cars with their differential at the front end, this component is integrated with the transmission housing. For such cases, both the transmission and differential use the same oil for lubrication.

The lubrication fluid is supposed to oil the pinion and ring gears, which are responsible for transferring power to the wheel axles. If your car has a limited-slip differential, the lubrication also aids in keeping all moving parts healthy. As such, changing the lubrication oil at recommended levels is an important factor in maintaining the performance of your car.
